本文件规定了厚度不小于6 mm的金属材料熔焊接头半自动或全自动超声衍射时差（TOFD）技术的应用。
本文件适用于板材、管材和容器的简单几何形状的全熔透焊接接头，其中焊缝金属和母材均为低碳钢或者低合金钢。在适当的情况下，TOFD也可用于其他具有较低的超声衰减（特别是散射衰减）的材料。
本文件提供了在材料纵波声速为（5 920±50）m/s和横波声速为（3 255±30）m/s的条件下进行TOFD应用的相关规定。在检测其他不同声速的材料时，有必要考虑声速影响。
本文件参考ISO 16828，提供了TOFD技术对熔焊接头中不连续的检测、定位、尺寸测量方面的应用以及该技术的特有功能和局限性的指导。在制造过程检测和在役检测中，TOFD可作为单独技术使用，也可与其他无损检测（NDT）方法或技术结合使用。
本文件按照ISO 17635的规定，确立了四个检测等级（A、B、C和D）。检测等级越高，检测可靠性越高。本文件还提供了选择检测等级的指导。
本文件允许评价TOFD指示以便后续验收。该评价基于对TOFD图像的透射波、反射波和衍射波信号的评定。
本文件不包括不连续的验收等级。
