本标准规定了由石油制取的船用燃料油的分类和代号、要求和试验方法、检验规则、包装、标志、运输、贮存及安全。本标准适用于海［洋］船用柴油机及其锅炉用燃料油。符合本标准的燃料油也适用于同样或类似制造的固定式柴油机和其他船舶用机械。本标准规定了用于船舶的4种馏分燃料油和6种残渣燃料油。其中馏分燃料DMX供柴油机应急时使用。
