本标准为密封放射源产生者提供了评价其产品在使用中安全性的系列检验，同时也便于使用者选择满足使用要求的放射源类型，特别是对关注防止因放射性物质泄漏而造成电离辐射照射的场所选择放射源类型时能提供帮助。本标准也可为管理部门提供指导。
这些检验分为几组，例如，包括暴露于异常高温和低温检验以及各种机械检验。每项检验适用于不同的严格程度。检验结果是否通过，取决于密封放射源内容物是否泄漏。
