GB/T 10001的本部分规定了信息载体中使用的通用公共信息图形符号及其应用原则，包括正方形边长大于10 mm的公共信息图形符号（简称图形符号）和正方形边长为3 mm～10 mm的公共信息图形符号（简称小型图形符号）。
本部分中规定的图形符号适用于公共场所及相关设施，具体用于公共信息导向系统中的位置标志、导向标志、信息版、示意图等导向要素的设计。
本部分中规定的小型图形符号适用于导向图、旅游指南、手册等便携印刷品以及设备操作面板等信息载体。
