GB/T 14455的本部分的第一法规定了通过测定在乙酸钠存在下，用乙酸酐乙酰化试样前后的酯值来评估精油中游离醇和总醇含量及测定单离及合成香料含醇量的方法。
本方法不适用于含有较多叔醇的精油(如芳樟醇和松油醇)、叔醇，因叔醇不能被完全乙酰化；亦不适用于含有较多酚类、内酯类、醛类和易烯醇化的酮类的精油，因除游离醇外，这些成分也会被乙酰化。
