本标准中摩尔法和电位滴定法适用于天然水、循环冷却水、软化水、锅炉炉水中氯离子含量的测定，摩尔法测定范围为3 mg/L～150 mg/L，超过150 mg/L时，可适当减少取样体积，稀释后测定；电位滴定法测定范围为5 mg/L～1 000 mg/L；共沉淀富集分光光度法适用于除盐水、锅炉给水中氯离子含量的测定，测定范围为10 μg/L～100 μg/L。
