本标准规定了工业循环冷却水中使用高锰酸盐指数法测定化学需氧量(COD)的方法。
本标准适用于工业循环冷却水中化学需氧量(CODMn) 含量为0.5 mg/L~10 mg/L(以O2计)的测定。其中，容量法适用于CODMn为2 mg/L～10 mg/L(以O2计)的测定；电位滴定法适用于CODMn为0.5 mg/L～10 mg/L(以O2计)的测定。浓度超出范围上限时可稀释后测定。
本标准也适用于原水、锅炉用水和再生水中化学需氧量(CODMn)的测定。
