本标准规定了硫化橡胶或热塑性橡胶在规定的试验温度下压缩到并保持在一恒定应变状态下作用力降低的两种测定方法。
试样分为圆柱形和环形两种。不同的试样尺寸和形状，得到的试验结果不同，只有相同形状和尺寸的试样，其试验结果才能进行比较。
环形试样特别适用于在液体环境中测定应力松弛。
本标准没有规定低于标准实验室温度的试验。本方法可用于低温试验，但其试验结果的可靠性没有被证实。
