本标准规定了真空釜式蒸馏法重烃类混合物蒸馏试验的方法概要、仪器、取样、仪器准备、试验步骤、结果计算、报告、精密度和偏差。
本标准适用于初馏点高于150 ℃，终馏点低于565 ℃的重烃类混合物如重质原油、石油馏分、渣油及合成油的蒸馏过程。制备粗柴油和润滑油馏分试样可参照本标准执行。本标准也可用于制备生产沥青用的渣油，但不总是适宜的，本试验中发生的长时间的热裂化可能改变其某些性质。
注1：最高切割温度与试样的加热极限有关。对于大多数样品，565 ℃是能够达到的最高切割温度，但是对于热敏感样品，最高切割温度会明显低于565 ℃，同样，对于热不敏感样品，最高切割温度可以稍微高于565 ℃。
注2：切割点在400 ℃之前原油的蒸馏也可使用GB/T 17280规定的试验方法。但与采用本标准得到的蒸馏曲线和馏分性质不可直接比较。
