本标准规定了工业机械电气设备控制与驱动装置间实时串行通信数据链路（总线）之间的总线接口及通信协议规范，目的在于实现基于实时串行通信协议的工业机械电气设备间控制装置、传感器、驱动、I/O等装置间的命令传输及应答，以支持装置间的互操作。
本标准适用于金属加工机械、纺织机械、印刷机械、缝制机械、塑料和橡胶机械、木工机械等电气设备用的开放式数控系统。其他工业机械设备用的开放式数控系统亦可参照执行。
