本标准规定了采用火焰原子吸收光谱法测定原油和渣油中镍、钒、铁、钠含量的两种方法。包括方法A——酸消解法测定样品中镍、钒和铁的含量和方法B——有机溶剂法测定样品中镍、钒和钠的含量。方法B是以油溶性金属元素为标准样来测定油溶性金属元素的含量，不适用于定量测定含有非油溶性颗粒的样品，因此，该方法测得的金属元素的总含量可能偏低，尤其是测定以无机钠盐形式存在的钠。
本标准适用于原油和渣油中镍、钒、铁、钠含量的测定。对于不同元素，两种测定方法的精密度不同，可根据具体分析的精密度要求来选取适宜的方法。
