本标准规定了小型水轮机的相关术语和定义、型式参数及性能保证、可靠性和产品质量保证，并对供货范围、检验与验收、制造厂应提供的技术文件等提出了要求。
本标准适用于机组功率在500 kW至10 000 kW之间，且转轮直径在3.3 m以下的小型水轮机。转轮直径或机组功率超过上述条件的水轮机按GB/T 15468规定执行。功率小于上述容量的水轮机可参照本标准执行。
