本标准适用于各种真空泵、真空机组和真空抽气系统。标准中列出了在真空泵的使用期间及随后的处置过程中，与其相关的重要的危害性，详细规定了适用于真空泵设计、安装、运行、维修及拆卸过程中的安全要求。
本标准不适用于开放的系统下连续进行抽气及入口处的压力高于75 kPa（750 mbar）的泵，例如真空吸尘器、换气扇。
一些用于特殊场合的真空泵应符合与其应用相关的特殊标准规定。
