GB/T 231的本部分规定了按GB/T 231.1测定布氏硬度用的布氏硬度计（以下简称硬度计）的检验和校准方法。
本部分适用于检查硬度计工作基本功能的直接检验法和对硬度计综合检查的间接检验法。间接检验法可独立地用于使用中硬度计的定期常规检查。
如果硬度计还用于其他方法的硬度试验，则应分别按每一种方法单独对硬度计进行检验。
本部分也适用于便携式硬度计。
