本标准规定了在工业及非工业环境下防止触及机械危险区的安全距离数值。安全距离适用于保护措施。本标准也给出了有关防止下肢自由触及危险区的安全距离的信息（见4.3）。
本标准适用于14岁及以上的人员（14岁人员身高的第5百分位数近似为1 400 mm）。另外，对于上肢，提供了3岁以上儿童（3岁儿童身高的第5百分位数近似为900 mm）通过开口触及时所需要的信息。
