本标准为内燃机薄壁轴瓦设计过程FMEA提供了指南（生产过程的FMEA则是供应商的责任），标准中列出了常见的失效模式及其潜在效应和潜在原因。
对每一种用途、每一个制造厂商和用户，可以对失效的发生、严重性和检测方面的风险的数值评估做出具体规定。
由于必须对每种情况作出评估，故风险数据不包括在本标准中。从统计学上进行评估的通用指南，可从参考资料中得到。
