本标准规定了主要用于检测铁磁性材料（焊缝、热影响区、母材）表面开口和近表面面型缺陷的涡流检测技术。
如设计规范有要求，本标准也可用于非铁磁性材料的检测。
本标准适用于陆上、海上制造、安装、在用过程中的裸露或带涂层焊缝的检测。
检测可以在所有可接近的、各种形式的焊缝表面上进行。
涡流检测通常在焊态下进行，表面粗加工可能会影响其检测精度。
