本标准规定了用于使用作为ISO 646主题的七位编码字符集、GB/T 11383主题的八位编码字符集和作为GB/T 2311主题的对以上编码字符集扩展的按位串行的起止和同步数据传输系统的字符结构。
本标准亦规定了与七位编码字符集一起使用的奇偶检验读出。
本标准适用于在相关CCITT V和X系列建议中定义的通过数据终端设备DTE和数据电路终接设备DCE之间由CCITT和ISO/IEC加以标准化的接口信息传输。
