本标准规定了应用于数字电视广播的基本EPG信息的内容格式和传输方式，以及应用于交换的扩展EPG信息的内容格式。对于应用于数字电视广播的扩展EPG内容格式和传输方式，由于与中间件和其他一些正在研究中的数字电视标准密切相关，本标准中目前未作规定。
本标准没有规定EPG的生成和显示方式，运营商和数字电视接收终端制造商可以自由选择生成和显示方式。
本标准适用于数字电视广播前端向接收终端传递基本EPG信息和数字电视广播前端之间交换EPG信息。
