本标准规定了火焰沿样品垂直表面的横向蔓延性能试验方法。本标准适用于建筑物和运输工具(如船舶、火车等)曝露面上使用的平板型单一材料、复合材料或组件的表面特性，管状制品通过特殊的安装和固定(见附录D)，也可用本标准的方法进行测试。
本标准用于描述和测量实验室内有引燃火焰存在时，与辐射热相应的材料、制品或组件的特性。不适用于独立评价材料、制品或组件在实际火灾中的火灾危害和火灾风险。
