本方法用于室温下测量试样单位面积上的涂层重量，其测量结果也可以用涂层厚度表示。
本标准适用于表面涂层中含有稳定的、不受干扰的、X射线荧光强度较大的特性元素的电工钢，给定涂层材料的测量范围主要取决于可获得的特征X射线荧光强度和可接受的测量不确定度，并且因所使用的仪器设备和测量方式而不同。
