本标准用于解决机械电气设备安全功能设计实现过程中，用于传输安全相关数据的串行数字通信系统（通常称为现场总线)的问题。它为相关应用在系统设计、安装、调试、修改和维护过程中提供指导。
注： 一个串行数字通信系统支持的最大从站数量是确定的，并且其未经授权访问的风险是可以忽略不计的。
本标准假设已经开发了SRECS安全要求规范（SRS)，并且SRECS的设计包含安全相关通信系统。本标准需要与IEC 62061一起使用。
