本标准描述了系统可信性分析建模以及利用模型计算可靠性和可用性量度的过程。
可靠性框图(RBD)建模技术主要用于不考虑修理、不考虑失效发生顺序的系统，对于需要考虑失效顺序或有修理的系统，其他的建模技术（如：马尔可夫方法）会更适合。
需要说明的是，本标准虽然经常使用“修理”一词，但“恢复”一词同样是可适用的。还需说明的是，“产品”和“模块”在本标准中也广泛应用，并在大多数情况下可互换。
