本标准规定了在开磁路下用一个探测线圈测定铁磁材料样品磁偶极矩的基本方法。磁偶极矩的测量可采用抽拉方式或旋转方式。本标准适用于所有铁磁材料，尤其适用于永磁（硬磁)材料的磁偶极矩的测量以及含有铁磁粘结剂的硬质合金材料的比饱和磁极化强度的测量。此外，通过一定的方式将试样磁化到饱和，试样的饱和磁偶极矩也可被确定。试样磁极化强度的平均值可通过测量其磁偶极矩和试样的体积而计算得出。磁矩线圈系统的校准和弱磁材料磁偶极矩的测量同样可以采用本方法。剩磁、矫顽力、最大磁能积及其他参数可在闭磁路下按GB/T 13012和GB/T 3217所描述的方法测量。软磁和半硬磁材料的内禀矫顽力HcJ可在开磁路下按GB/T 13888所描述的方法测量。
