本标准规定了钢丝绳失效分析的术语和定义、总体原则及人员能力要求、一般程序、分析方法、分析报告和残样保存。
本标准适用于各种用途钢丝绳的失效分析，钢丝及钢丝绳制品的失效分析可参照使用。
注： 本标准为分析钢丝绳由于制造缺陷，或装卸、贮存、安装损伤，或断丝、断股、断裂、腐蚀、过载等原因导致的失效提供指导。通常情况下，由于失效的钢丝绳已经承受了载荷、弯曲、挤压、旋转等复杂应力的作用，钢丝绳及绳中钢丝的外观、尺寸、力学及工艺性能发生了变化，因此其外观、尺寸、力学及工艺性能测试结果不作为判定钢丝绳出厂是否合格的依据。
