本标准规定了消声室和半消声室中包围噪声源（机器或设备）表面上声压级的测量方法。使用这些测量方法可以计算声源的1/3倍频带或A计权声功率级（以及在脉冲或瞬态噪声辐射情况下的声能量级），包括考虑了测量时间和地点的气象条件与对应于基准特性声阻抗的基准气象条件之间差异的修正。
一般情况下，测量频率范围是中心频率为100 Hz~10 000 Hz的1/3倍频带。根据需要，频率范围可以扩大或者缩小，并且测试室对这些频率应符合要求。
