本标准规定了从变压器类电气设备、汽轮机、水轮机、调速系统中取变压器油、汽轮机油(含抗燃油)样的方法，也规定了从油桶、油罐、油罐车中取样的方法。
本标准适用于变压器、互感器、油开关、套管等充油电气设备及汽轮机、水轮机、调相机、调速系统等用油的采集。发电机、给水泵等用油的采集可参照执行。
