本标准规定了交流额定电压72.5 kV及以上额定频率50 Hz的户内和户外安装的气体绝缘金属封闭开关设备，其绝缘的获得至少部分通过绝缘气体而不是处于大气压力下的空气。
为了便于本标准的使用，术语“GIS”和“开关设备”均用于表述“气体绝缘金属封闭开关设备”。
本标准涵盖的气体绝缘金属封闭开关设备由可以直接连接在一起的独立元件构成，且这些元件只能按这种方式运行。
