本标准规定了挤奶机挤奶和清洗功能的最低性能和参数要求，以及特定的尺寸要求。同时还对挤奶设备的材质、设计、结构、安装等要求作出了具体的规定。
本标准适用于利用真空产生脉动、利用（至少部分利用）气流帮助输送奶（奶牛、水牛、绵羊和山羊等）的挤奶设备。本标准定性的要求同样也适用于其他产奶哺乳动物的挤奶设备。
本标准的一些条款不适用于所有类型的挤奶机。
