Scope of Application：
This document applies to the exchange of information on the power system including, but not limited to, substations, control centers, operations and maintenance centers, energy management systems, grid stabilization systems based on synchronized phases, large energy generation (including fossil fuel generation), distributed energy generation (renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar), energy storage, and load management (demand-side management and demand response at the distribution level of consumption or production).
This document addresses issues encountered when migrating from Internet Protocol version 4 (hereinafter referred to as IPv4) to Internet Protocol version 6 (hereinafter referred to as IPv6), and describes the migration strategy, including the impact on applications, communication stacks, network nodes, configurations, address assignments, network security, and related management.
This document describes the concepts and paths necessary to migrate from IPv4 to IPv6, taking into account the backward compatibility of several protocols in the IEC 61850 framework.
A review of IEC standards and technical reports against the Reference Architecture for the Exchange of Information in Power Systems (IEC 62357-1), taking into account the impact that allowing or requiring IPv6 would have on these documents, and this document supports the revisions to these documents as a result of the introduction of IPv6.
This document does not mandate the use of IPv6 technology in power communications.
