Scope of Application:  
This document provides guidelines for the quantitative analysis and identification of airborne carbon black and/or amorphous silica particles in terms of number concentration (units/cm 3) based on particle size in air samples collected in mixed dust industrial manufacturing environments. This document describes a method for collecting air samples on a 25 mm diameter polycarbonate membrane using a charged low-pressure cascade impact sampler (ELPCI). This document applies to the sampling of air in manufacturing environments containing many types of particles. This document should only be used in environments where aerosols consisting of particles differing in chemical and physical properties or where disturbances are controlled (e.g., diesel sources). Although other sampling methods may be applicable, this document is limited to describing methods relevant to ELPCI. Samples collected by ELPCI are analyzed for particle morphology and elemental composition by TEM and EDS to determine particle type. This information is combined with size  particle concentration information determined by ELPCI to obtain the airborne concentration of the target material.
