GB/T 39560的本部分规定了一种沸水提取方法，其目的是对于金属样品上的无色和有色防腐镀层中的六价铬进行定性测定。
由于其高活性，防腐镀层中六价铬的含量会随时间和储藏条件发生显著变化。由于样品提交前的贮存条件经常是未知的，或者无法提供，因此该过程只能根据测试时在镀层中检测到的六价铬含量来确定其存在性。对新镀的样品进行测试时，需要至少5 d的等待时间（在电镀过程完成后），以确保镀层已经稳定。等待期内可能发生三价铬到六价铬的氧化。
六价铬的存在性是由镀层单位表面积含有六价铬质量决定，其单位以微克每平方厘米（μg/cm2）表示。之所以首选这种方法，是因为在产品生产之后，往往难以准确测量防腐镀层的质量。从镀层技术的角度来看，整个行业的变化趋势是，要么使用不含六价铬的化学物质，即很少或者根本不存在六价铬，要么使用传统的含有六价铬的化学物质，即六价铬含量显著的，并且能够可靠地检测到。考虑到行业变化，判断六价铬存在与否足以满足法规合规性的测试目的。
在这个过程中，如果检测到样品中的六价铬低于0.10 μg/cm2的LOQ（定量限），即可认为样品的六价铬呈阴性。由于即使在同一批次的样品中六价铬也不可能均匀地分布在镀层中，因而将0.10 μg/cm2~0.13 μg/cm2之间的“灰色区域”确定为“非结论性的”，以减少因不可避免的镀层变化而产生不一致的结果。在这种情况下，可能需要进行附加测试来证实六价铬的存在。当检测到六价铬的含量高于0.13 μg/cm2时，即认为样品是阳性的，即镀层中存在六价铬。
