本文件描述了评定完整(即未破损)艇的稳性和浮性的方法，也包括评定易灌水下沉艇的浮性的方法。
利用本文件对稳性和浮性进行评估，能为每一艘艇划定与其设计载荷和最大载荷相适应的设计类别(C或D)。
本文件适用于艇体长度小于6 m的以人力或机械动力推进的艇的稳性和浮性的评定与分类，但可居住多体帆艇除外。设有全甲板和符合ISO 11812要求的快速泄水艉舱的艇体长度小于6 m的艇，能选择按ISO 12217-1或 ISO 12217-2进行评定。在这种情况下，能指定选用更高的设计类别。
本文件包括对可居住的多体艇翻转敏感性的评估、可行的逃生方式的定义和翻转浮性的要求。
本文件不包括:
——ISO 6185所涉及的充气艇和刚性充气艇，ISO 6185中对ISO 12217系列特定条款的引用除外；
——ISO 13590所涉及的水上摩托艇和其他类似动力艇；
