本文件规定了在酸性石油炼制和相关加工环境中抗硫化物应力开裂（SSC）的金属材料要求，该环境中H2S为气相或是溶解于含烃或不含烃的水相中（液态水）。本文件不包括设计规范，也不包括湿H2S开裂、环境断裂、腐蚀以及其他失效模式。本文件旨在供炼油厂、设备制造商、工程承包商和建筑承包商使用。
具体而言，本文件旨在防止石油炼制工业用设备（包括压力容器、换热器、管道、阀体、泵和压缩机）和部件发生SSC。对《ASME锅炉和压力容器规范》（BPVC）第Ⅸ卷中P-No.1类别下碳钢的SSC预防要求与NACE SP 0472相一致。
本文件适用于暴露于酸性炼油环境（见第6章）中的所有设备部件，这些部件的SSC失效将会：
a） 危及承压系统的完整性；
b） 妨碍设备的基本功能；和/或
c） 阻碍设备在继续承压时恢复到运行状态。
