本文件适用于铝、阳极氧化铝、黄铜、镉、铬、钴、铜、金、铟、铅、镍、镍-硼、镍-钴、镍-铁、镍-磷、钯、铂、釉瓷或搪瓷、铑、银、锡、锡-铅、锡-镍、锡-锌、锌等覆盖层以及铝、铍-铜、黄铜、铜、铁、镍铁钴合金、镁、镍、镍-硼、镍-磷、磷-青铜、银、钢、锡-镍和锌合金基体金属上的铬酸盐转化膜、磷酸盐转化膜、氟锆转化膜、钛锆转化膜,其他转化膜参照使用(包括有关的有机膜)。
本文件所述的测试方法通过与覆盖层不连续处暴露的基体反应，从而形成可观察到的反应产物。
注1：孔隙一般都垂直于覆盖层表面，但也可能倾斜于覆盖层表面；它们往往呈圆柱形，也可能呈扭曲形，见附录A。
注2：孔隙尺寸各不相同,从亚微观,即在普通显微镜下不可见；到微观，即放大10倍到1 000倍可见；到宏观,即肉眼可见。
注3： 孔隙可以通过覆盖层表面的变色明显地显示出来。
注4： 覆盖层中的孔隙并非总是有害的。例如，在不连续铬中，微孔铬或者微裂纹铬是有益的，在测试时要导电以显示孔隙。
注5： 孔隙率试验的结果以每平方厘米的孔隙数来表示，是与测试时所用的特定试验方法和检查中所用的放大倍数有关的相对值。附录B给出了典型的报告和评价。
